Response surfaces provide the subject matter for Chapter 6, and the emphasis is again mathematical, with concerns about canonical forms, rotatability, and orthogonal blocking, all discussed using matrix algebra. Finally, in the very last section, a real example appears. Unfortunately, it is mostly used to illustrate computation of things like the analysis-of-variance table, covariance matrix, and prediction variance. It is casually mentioned that a computer might be helpful. There is a bibliography of chemistry journal articles, separated into 17 different fields of interest in chemistry, that describe specific applications of the optimization of response surfaces. These 15 pages were the best part of the book. An appendix gives listings for three BASIC language computer programs: percentiles and ordinates for Student’st, normality testing via the Anderson-Darling statistic, and plotting positions and guardrails for half-normal plots.
