This study examined the attitudes, emotional and physical symptoms commonly associated with menstruation in women. The group of 100 women who acted as subjects for this study was made up mainly of college students. The remaining number, about a fourth, consisted of nurses, other professional women and doctors’ wives. The ages ranged from 17 to 49. Each person was given a questionnaire to be filled out. These sheets were numbered in a way that prevented identification of the individuals filling them in. In group of 100 women, physiological, mental and emotional symptoms were noted. Half the group were informed before onset of menses by mothers. A small proportion, less than a tenth, heard from doctors, nurses or teachers. About the same number were uninformed before onset and the rest picked up the information from other children or in unknown ways. About one sixth were pleased at the onset, practically all of them giving the reason that they felt grown up. About one fourth of the group report that they were bothered or angry at the onset. A very few, about a twentieth, were actually frightened and nearly a fourth reported indifference. The great amount of individual variability makes it difficult to draw very definite conclusions.(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2019 APA, all rights reserved)
