Various regions of the human stomach were analyzed histochemically for the cellular localization of monoamines and histamine, and radiometrically for the detection of histidine decarboxylase activity.1.Gastric histamine is located exclusively in mast cells evenly distributed throughout the entire thickness of the mucosa and submucosa.2.No detectable histidine decarboxylase activity occurs in any of the regions.3.5-Hydroxytryptamine is located in enterochromaffin cells which increase in number from the corpus towards the antrum. There is evidence that some of these cells receive an adrenergic innervation.4.After incubation of tissue specimens withl-DOPA another system of cells becomes visible in the microscope owing to their green formaldehyde-induced fluorescence, probably due to dopamine formed intracellularly. Their morphology resembles that of the enterochromaffin cells and they have hence been termed “enterochromaffin-like”. The regional distribution of these cells is similar to that of the enterochromaffin cells.5.Adrenergic nerve terminals from the submucosa extend into the mucosa to run in the lamina propria close to the epithelium.
