The aim of the studies described here was to identify pharmacodynamic end points for antihypertensive therapy suitable for optimizing patterns of administra-tion of drugs that lower blood pressure. We first present background data from groups of normal subjects to illustrate the approach we used; we then show samples of data from hypertensive subjects representative of the patterns that have led us to a proposal for a particular circadian phasing of antihypertensive therapy. We also suggest that hypertension may be associated with increased prevalence and power of ultradian rhythms in blood pressures.
