Two kinds of wrapping film made of poly(vinylidene chloride) were pyrolyzed under an air stream, and the pyrolysis products were identified by capillary gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Many chlorinated aromatic compounds and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons were detected. Important products were chlorinated benzenes, styrenes, phenols, phenylacetylenes, naphthalenes, biphenyls, and benzofurans. Most of these compounds were newly detected. It was also found that many chlorinated aromatic compounds were produced by pyrolysis even at 200/sup 0/C. Small amounts of chlorodibenzofuran and dichlorodibenzofuran were detected in the pyrolysate at 600/sup 0/C.
