20 animals were trained on a successive discrimination to respond to a black-white stimulus and to ignore chain curtains. Another 20 animals were trained to react to the presence or absence of the curtains and ignore the black-white cue. In a series of test situations the animals tended to choose on the basis of the cue they had been taught to respond to; relearning was faster on the preferred than on the non-preferred cue; and the discrimination on the preferred cue was reversed more rapidly. It would seem that the learning of new instrumental responses is faster on a familiar cue than on a non-familiar one. The findings are interpreted in terms of the concept of the acquired distinctiveness of cues.(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
