HPHIS research examines the relationship be-•*-tween types of social activity and life satisfaction among a sample of individuals in a retirement community. The principal intent in the paper is the statement, formal and explicit, of a theory which has long been implicit in gerontological literature, the so-called activity theory of aging. The essence of this theory is that there is a positive relationship between activity and life satisfaction and that the greater the role loss, the lower the life satisfaction. A second goal of the paper is to empirically test hypotheses derived from the theory thus constructed, using secondary data, as a means of illustrating theory-development applied to a common proposition in gerontology.
