Discusses why some individuals voluntarily and chronically consume quantities of alcohol that seriously impair both their functioning in society and their health. It is contended that a" normal" individual or an alcoholic will experience a number of pharmacological effects of ethanol that range from low-dose activating to high-dose depressant effects. Literature concerned with the development of alcohol tolerance (AT) in humans and animals is reviewed to indicate the salient features of AT and gaps in present knowledge. Areas of study that have produced (or will produce in the future) fruitful data regarding this phenomenon are summarized.
