Aim Diagnostics is a prerequisite for effective and efficient treatment of complex diseases. Consequently, the progress of medicine requires the development of innovative diagnostic devices from the early product idea to market maturity. However, this complex process is not always perceived holistically so that technical and economic dimensions are separated. In this paper we develop a model of innovation management of diagnostic technology with the aim to professionalize the process of developing respective devices.Method We develop a model of the process of innovation management of diagnostic technology from the product idea up to market maturity. Barriers and determinants of the process are explained. The insights are applied to the example of a device to detect circulating tumor cells. Results Innovation management covers a number of phases from the product idea, product development, certification, reimbursement until market launch. Frequently, the first three phases are seen as a technical problem, while the last two phases are reserved to economists and business administrators. However, an efficient innovation management requires that instruments of business administration and health economics are applied from the very beginning. Conclusion A set of well-established instruments of innovation management and health economic evaluation is ready to support the process from the product idea to market launch. Listing the respective instruments will serve as a stimulation for professional management of diagnostics devices.
