Scleroderma is a disease of the connective tissue. Skin change is its most prominent feature, but the gastrointestinal tract, kidney. lung, or heart may also be involved. Increased collagen is a hallmark of this disorder, although vascular changes are present in ali affected organs. One cannot easily sm-pass Sir W1lliam Osler's classic description in 1896 of the plight of a scleroderma pattent as one" encased in an evershrtnking slowly contracttng skin of steel." 1
