Propyl gallate is a tasteless, 'non-toxic' antioxidant, used commercially since 1947. Lipstick dermatitis due to propyl gallate has been described in a 58year-old woman (2). Contact sensitivity has also been reported in various topical preparations, including AlphosyJ® cream (propyl gallate 0.015%) (3), Idomin Fukt® hand cream (propyl gallate 0.006%) (4) democycline ointment (5) (propyl gallate 0.1 %) and. a "lotion for care of the body and babies" (6). Margarine, butter and essential oils are common sources of propyl gallate, frequently combined with other gallate esters (octy!, Iaury!). Contact sensitization to gallates has been described as an occupational hazard in the bakery and catering trades (4, 7, 8, 9). Topical propyl gallate (20%) is a potent contact sensitizer in the guinea pig and specific unreponsiveness can be induced in previously-sensitized guinea pigs (10). Kahn eta!. (10) sensitized 5 out of 10 adult human volunteers with propyl gallate (20%). They speculate as to whether the lack of reports of sensitivity in man, both in occupational and domestic situations, is due to a similar unresponsiveness induced by the consumption of propyl gallate in the diet. There are no accurate data as to the overall incidence of contact sensitivity to propyl gallate. There were 8 positive reactions to propyl gallate I% in 200 consecutive patients with dermatitis (11); however, these were thought to be irritant and not relevant to their current dermatitis. No positive reactions were obtained in 40 control subjects in 2 recent studies (4, 6). SHORT COMMUNICATIONS
