The explanations of the PWM strategies of a direct matrix converter are classified into “Direct AC/AC converter”, “Virtual AC/DC/AC Conversion” and “Instantaneous Space Vector Diagram”. Since the PWM strategies of matrix converters are complex, it may be difficult to understand the same PWM strategies under the different explanations. This paper presents the visualization of the PWM waveforms of the output voltage and the input current during the input and output voltage periods. From the visualized waveforms of the output voltage and the input current, the difference and evaluation among several PWM strategies can be easily realized. For the two PWM strategies which are derived from the fundamental equations of the duty cycles of a matrix converter, the visualized waveforms of the output voltage and the input current are derived. The proposed visualization can be extended to the transient state under the change of the output voltage reference. The effectiveness of the visualization of PWM strategy has been verified by comparison between the visualized and experimental waveforms.
