Three species of Hippothoa which are commonly found today in the intertidal and subtidal zones along the Pacific Coast of North America require specific temperatures for the formation of a brood chamber or ovicell. These species are found as fossils on the west coast and the temperature requirements are used to interpret paleotemperatures of Middle Pliocene fossil assemblages in the Fernando, Etchegoin, Pico, and Rio Dell Formations.
