In this chapter, we will look at data compression for future digital systems. Surely, few, if any, of the pioneers working with data compression in the 1950s could have envisioned the diversity of today’ s applications or that it would be so vital to their existence and viability. In the intervening years, increasingly more powerful data compression has developed at a pace equal to and sometimes ahead of the VLSI technology needed for its implementation. With continuing progress in both algorithms and electronics, future digital systems can be expected to be wrapped evermore tightly around what has become a core technology, data compression.
