The application of Dye-Sensitized Solar Cell's (DSC's) to metal substrates is a potentially exciting leap in the application of DSC technology to building integrated photovoltaics (BIPV). Currently, the most cost efficient DSCs use TiO2 as a working electrode. A significant challenge for extending device lifetime is the effective shielding of the TiO2 to light of wavelengths lower than 387nm (band gap of anatase TiO2) and 413nm (band gap of rutile TiO2). This paper presents a convenient method to measure in situ TiO2 photoactivity by measuring the gaseous by-products (CO2, H2O and HCl) of photo-catalytic mineralisation of homogeneous PVC-TiO2 films. Measurements have been made using a specially developed UV irradiation cell attached to a closed loop FTIR CO2 Detection Reactor. This experimental set up has been used in combination with Schott glass filters to evaluate the kinetics of photodegradation by monitoring CO2 evolution at various different wavelengths of light.
