Lower genitourinary infections, such as urethritis and cervicitis, caused by sexually transmitted microorganisms are a significant source of morbidity for adolescents. Symptoms of these conditions may vary from asymptomatic to dysuria, urethral discharge, and vaginal discharge (in the case of cervicitis)|| 1, 2]. Common causative organisms for urethritis and cervicitis are Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Chlamydia trachomatis. Cates and colleagues [3] estimated the incidence of chlamydial infection in the United States in 1996 was 3 million and gonorrhea infection was 650,000. Ureaplasma urealyticum, Mycoplasma hominis, M genitalium, and Trichomonas vaginalis also are implicated in these clinical conditions. Although easily eradicable if treated early, some of these infections have been linked to serious reproductive health consequences [l, 4, 5], more systemic effects such as disseminated gonococcal infections and Reiter's syndrome, and facilitation of HIV transmission [6].
