Regulatory proteins often bind to DNA via motifs that are used to classify these proteins into families of DNA-binding proteins. The increasing interest in RNA-mediated gene regulation has resulted in distinct motifs also being identified for RNA-binding proteins, in a recent review, ten'RNP (ribonucleoprotein) families' were distinguished], including the relatively common RNP motif 2, the RGG box 2 and the Yd-i motif 3. Recent findings suggest that the list of RNA-binding motifs could soon be extended by a surprising new member.
