There is ample evidence that the location of a pollution monitoring station relative to nearby sources (such as highways) affects values observed at the station, particularly for CO and other vehicular pollutants. A standardized system of site selection, such as the one proposed, appears essential to improve comparability and meaningfulness of data obtained from different air monitoring stations throughout the USA.
