Recently inNature, Sun et al. (2014) used a sleeping beauty transposon system to demonstrate that natural hematopoiesis is sustained by the successive recruitment of thousands of clones that are mostly lineage restricted. These findings call into question whether homeostatic hematopoiesis is sustained by hematopoietic stem cells traditionally identified by transplantation.
