A method of stabilizing the membrane potential of an isolated frog nerve fiber and its limitations are described. The method involves use of 2 feedback amplifier systems for measuring the membrane potential and for stabilizing the membrane potential at desired values. A qualitative description of the membrane currents associated with step polarizations is presented and the properties of the currents are described in detail. The membrane currents described for frog nerve are similar to those observed in squid fiber suggesting that the frog nerve, when depolarized, undergoes specific changes in membrane conductance which are very similar to those occurring in the squid giant nerve fiber.
