How small-scale and decentralized African political institutions developed into the large kingdoms so prominent in early African history has puzzled anthropologists and historians alike. This book approaches the question from a historical perspective. It is based on the early history of the Mbundu of north-western Angola, and interprets oral histories and Portuguese documentation with sensitivity to African ideologies and kinship systems. £9.50 Oxford Studies in African Affairs Oxford Studies in African Decolonisation in the Third World has most often been approached by tracing the ties of nationalist movements to the attainment of independence. This book attempts to revise the perspective. It presents a model of decolonisation centering on the idea that the process was shaped by the reaction of colonial interests to the ascendancy of a national elite. This is the first study of decolonisation in Africa based on primary sources, and one of the few contemporary studies dealing with white settlers.
