Forty years ago VOELCICER (l), an English physician, described a peculiar symptom complex in a child, 2 years old, admitted to Middlesex Hospital in London. On admission the child had been ailing for 24 hours. The clinical picture included vomiting, marked prostration, high fever (40"~ C) and widespread petechiae all over the body. The child died 48 hours after onset of disease, and was considered a doubtful case of variola. Autopsy showed haemorrhages in both suprarenal bodies. This is the first known definitely established case of acute bilateral suprarenal apoplexy in children. During subsequent years a great many similar observations were published in the English literature. GARROD and DRYS-DALE (2) published a case in 1898, BATTEN (3) one case in 1898, ANDREWS (4) one case in 1898, TALBOT (5) 2 cases 1900, LITTLE (6) 5 cases 1901, BLAKER and BAILEY (7) 4 cases 1901, LANGMEAD (8) 2 cases 1904, WATERHOURE (9) one case in 1911. With reference to his own case and on the strength of this and observations made by others, earlier, the last-mentioned author submits a brief and elucidating description of the symptomatic picture in acute bilateral suprarenal apoplexy in children.
