Two-photon laser-induced-fluorescence has been used to obtain the first measured propellant density profiles in an ion thruster plume. The United Kingdom T5 ion thruster was employed to demonstrate the technique and expand the data base of information concerning gridded ion thrusters. Neutral xenon atoms are responsible for the formation of charge exchange ions which limit thruster lifetime by eroding the extraction grid set, and indirectly contaminate the associated spacecraft with grid material. The relative density of neutral xenon atoms in the ground state has been measured to examine its dependence on operating point and plume spatial coordinate. The results are compared to theoretical means of computing the density.
