This paper evaluates relationships in the light of morphological and palaeontologlcal evidence and proposes an evolutionary scheme which accounts for the present distribution of extant pallnurld species. The family is divisible into 2 groups [long dash] Silentes and Stridentes-and within each a parallel trend in several morphological features is apparent. Coincident with these morphological trends is a habitat trend from bathyal to littoral waters; adaptive advantage under these conditions are considered. The warmest shallowest regions contain the most species because of the greater diversity of habitat but these species are the most vulnerable in a changing total environment. The fossils indicate past radiations into shallow water but not the surviving stock. The surviving ancestral line may be represented by the deeper water inhabitants. An analysis of depth and latitude distributions of the palinurld genera shows that the spatial distributions of the genera rarely overlap; each genus appears to have a separate set of depth and latitude parameters. In the southwest Indian Ocean 1 species of every palinurld genus is represented, presumably because the total region provides all the separate habitats for these genera. There are 2 patterns of distribution, a circumpolar and a cireumequatorial pattern. The species of Puerulus (a deep water circumequatorial genus) appear to be associated with oceanic basins. Speclation within the most recently evolved palinurld genus (Panulirus) has occurred during the Pleistocene and the 4 species groups probably reflect 4 major glaciatlon periods. Interglacials allowed equatorial inter-ocean dispersal of the pelagic larvae; during glacials, stocks were isolated by physical barriers and more defined current systems. The bathyal region for many marine organisms is the original region. Radiations have proceeded both up into shallow water and down into the deeper abyssal regions.
