We investigated the compositional dependence of microstructure and the coercivity of FePt–M–B(MZr,Nb,La) sputter-deposited films. As-deposited ternary FePt–B films have an amorphous structure and low coercivity. After annealing at 923K for 1.8ks, ordered L10FePt nanoparticles were observed. With the adding of the fourth element of M(Zr,Nb,La), the as-deposited films were also of the amorphous structure. After annealing at the same condition, the films show high coercivity of ∼520kA/m and ordered L10FePt phase are found. Compared with the ternary FePt–B films, the structure, coercivity and grain size vary with the additional element (M) and the compositions. The effects of additive elements on transformation to the L10-ordered phase have been studied.
