This study considers the question of song tutor choice in zebra finches, Taeniopygia guttata. Males selectively learned song elements from one tutor when give a choice of two. In zebra finches raised by their mother alone behavioural differences between song tutors appeared to be important in tutor choice: youngsters preferred to learn from the tutor who was most aggresive towards them. Paternal influence was also extremely important and normally raised youngsters selectively learned from tutors with similar songs to their father. This could provide a cue for optimal outbreeding if females were to select mates on the basis of song similarity to their father.
