Colored afterimages were obtained [in human subjects] after fixation of a neutral grey spot on a colored surround. The color of the spot afterimage was similar to that of the previous surrounding area, and had 2 components which could be elicited independently. Complementary afterimages were generated by the subjective contrast color which was induced into the grey spot during the adaptation period. The complementary afterimage of the surround at the end of the adaptation period was capable of inducing contrast color into the neutral spot of the test field. Thus simultaneous contrast colors can produce afterimages (successive contrast), and conversely, colored afterimages can induce simultaneous contrast color.
