A study in eastern Kentucky, designed to learn what percent of the female flowers of white oak develop into mature acorns, indicates that most of the potential acorn crop is prematurely abscised. During 1962 and 1963, only 1.3 and 3.5 percent of the female flowers and acorns collected from nine white oak trees were mature. Almost 90 percent of all abscissions occurred from April 30 to July 15, the period of pollination, ovule development, and fertilization.
