Thisstudyexaminedwhetherandhowmobilecommunicationinfluencestheextenttowhich oneengageswithnewpeopleinpublicsettings.Contrarytoourexpectation,generaluseofthe technologyinpublicdidnotdetractfromconversingwithstrangers.Shiftingfocusfrom where oneusesthemobilephoneto howitisused,wefoundthatusesforcoordinationandnewseach leadtoincreasedconversationswithstrangersinpublicsettings,whilerelationalusedetracted from them. The findings also reveal an interactive effect such that those who use mobile technologyfornews andfrequentlyuseitinpublicweremorelikelytoengagewithstrangersin public.The discussion offers interpretationofthefindings anddirectionsfor futureresearch.
