The argument that other minds exist because others have bodies similar to mine--and because others also exhibit various sorts of behaviour which in my own case are signs of various inner experiences-has a long and distinguished history. Even today many philosophers regard this argument as the firmest means whereby the ascription of mental states to others is established. Here I propose to examine closely the structure and foundations of the inductive argument designed to show the existence of other minds. Finally, I shall subject the inductive method in general to scrutiny. My results suggest that the whole attempt to employ induction to establish the existence of mental states in others may be based on a misconception of the nature of induction.
