Unilateral and bilateral pyramidal lesions were made at the level of the trapezoid body by the anterior approach on the common rhesus monkey. 10 animals with complete unilateral pyramidal section survived from 2 days to 32 mos. Hypo-tonic paresis of the opposite side of the body occurs affecting all somatic, and some visceral function. The outstanding features are diminished muscle tone; diminished cutaneous reflexes; slow, full tendon reflexes restricted to the muscle stimulated; lowered skin temp.; defective initiation and execution of all performance by skeletal musculature with elimination of non-stereotyped components and elimination of all discrete usage of the digits. In addition to involvement of the musculature of all extremities, bilateral p.yramidal lesions cause extreme hypotonia of the axial musculature; the head is unstable, the body sags, the wt. of the viscera causes abdominal bulging and the tail droops. Of special interest are the means whereby the animal attempts to compensate for the disturbed motor function. Sectioning of the medullary pyramids interrupts corticospinal action and that alone, for retrograde degeneration stops almost immediately above the lesion.
