Data from study of 14 well and healthy premature infants, 1 to 10 weeks old given1 μc of Fe59, were analyzed for percentage absorption and utilization of iron. A significant correlation between tagged iron absorption and rate of growth was demonstrated. The course of absorbed isotopic iron was traced by surface counting of internal organs and blood sampling. The amount of tracer iron utilized for hemoglobin formation correlated significantly with rate of growth. The degree of erythropoietic activity appears to affect positively the immediate utilization of absorbed iron. Premature infants absorb and utilize iron to a greater degree during the first 10 weeks of life than in later infancy and childhood.
