This article provides an overview of conversation‐analytic studies on the organization of turn‐taking for conversation. This organization generates orderly turn‐taking in which participants talk one at a time without significant overlap or gaps. It consists of three components: the turn‐constructional unit (TCU), turn‐allocational techniques, and ordering rules that prioritize the turn‐allocational techniques. Each of these components is discussed using Japanese and English examples. The article also discusses the resources that a given language's syntactic structure makes available for allocating turns and notes several contingencies that result in “violations” of the turn‐taking rules.
