A Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy study of an electrochemically synthesized polypyrrole film is conducted by means of reflection absorption spectroscopy (FTIR RAS) and the FTIR KBr disk transmission method. In the RAS spectrum, the NH stretching mode is observed at 3400 cm-1, while no NH stretching mode is observed in the KBr transmission spectrum. Since the RAS method detects the vertical mode and the KBr transmission spectrum is due to the lateral mode, the electrochemically synthesized polypyrrole has higher order structure so that the orientation of the NH bond is parallel to the film plane together with the effect of hydrogen deficiency at the nitrogen site. The observed polymer IR spectrum profile for the ring-stretching band and the CH in-plane and out-of-plane modes is different from that of the monomer, reflecting the alpha-alpha' conjugated polymer structure.
