Chiao Tso or Hsiu Wu Hsien is the name of a coal-mining village in the province of Honan, not far from the south-east corner of Shansi. The country to the north of the village is quite hilly, with many intersecting valleys; and it is in one of these that the Chiao Tso potteries were situated.Although the wares that were manufactured there in the nth and 12th centuries seem to have enjoyed considerable popularity, we do not find the kilns mentioned in any of the standard Chinese works on ceramics, and it was as late as 1933 that collectors first heard the name.
