Higher Education (HE) institutions in Europe envisage a great movement towards internationalisation. On the one hand it is encouraged by international organisations like the EC through special action programmes such as ERASMUS, COMETT, LINGUA and TEMPUS. To an increasing extent diplomas which have been obtained at HE institutions abroad are being accepted in the framework of national study courses. On the other hand the society itself is becoming more international and therefore ascribes and defines new international needs to education. Furthermore, this transition towards internationalisation is influenced by factors within the organisation of HE itself. In most EC member states, HE institutions have been given a greater autonomy to formulate their own priorities and strategies by their Ministries of Education, and one of the outcomes of policies like these is that universities and institutes define internationalisation as one of their highest priorities.
