The eastern woodchuck (Marmota monax) is a useful animal model to investigate the pathogenesis of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection in humans. Woodchuck hepatitis virus (WHV), a member of Hepadnaviridae, is closely related to HBV, having strong similarities in morphology, genome structure and gene products, replication, epidemiology, the course of infection, and in the development of illness and hepatocellular carcinoma. Also, the humoral and T-helper-cell response to WHV is similar to that in humans infected with HBV (Roggendorf and Tolle 1995; Tennant and Gerin 1994). In this animal model, further studies of immunological processes leading to persistent hepadnavirus infection or development of new immunotherapies of chronic hepatitis B are difficult. One reason is the lack of basic information about components of the immune system like cytokines and specific surface antigens of lymphocytes.Tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) are known to play a pleiotropic role in acute-phase response and are important signals for cellular differentiation and proliferation (Aggarwal and Natarajan 1996; Akira and Kishimoto 1992; Fey et al. 1994). Interferon-γ (IFN-γ) regulates macrophage activation, class II major histocompatibility complex antigen expression, and antibody production (Billiau 1996).
