The description and analysis of the occupational world of the lower ranks has become a major theme of sociological research on the police (Chatterton, 1979; Holdaway, 1983; Manning, 1977; Policy Studies Institute 1983). Researchers have now begun to chart an ethnographic map of routine police work, mostly of patrol duties in the inner city, paying particular attention to officers’ perceptions of the area where they work, of the task of policing and of the population they serve. Some scholars have gone beyond a description and analysis of perceptions to document police actions — the strategies and tactics that officers routinely employ. This complex contouring of beliefs, values and attitudes and their associated actions, which officers regard as ‘commonsense’, is conceptualised as ‘the occupational culture’ of the lower police ranks.
