Scrapie-associated fibrils were demonstrated by electron microscopy in the brain of all 12 sheep with clinically suspected scrapie from a number of flocks, but not in the brain of 4 normal sheep, 2 of which were from a scrapie flock. All 12 diagnoses were confirmed histologically by demonstration of a spongiform encephalopathy, though there seemed to be no relation between the degree of vacuolation of neurons and the number of scrapie-associated fibrils.
