Performances were compared of several mathematical models for prediction of the perceived odor intensities of odorant mixtures from the odor intensities and some other related properties of the components. The models included Berglund''s vectorial, an extension of the U model proposed by Patte and Laffort, a UPL model which utilizes exponents of the psychophysical power law, and some simplified models. Data for the model testing were obtained from literature and from new experimental measurements in which the odor intensity of vapours of 28 odorous substances and their 168 binary, 112 ternary, and 28 duplicated quaternary mixtures were matched vs. 1-butanol. The best performance on the literature data, which were obtained by the magnitude estimation methods, was shown by the U model. The best performance on the new data obtained by the butanol scale method was by the simplified vectorial and U models; they used constant values of the interaction term cos .alpha.
