Evaluation of techniques for identification of a superior genotype from a sample was extended to include the sampling of environments and the utilization of genotypic yields based on their performance in all environments tested. Two-stage testing was considered where all genotypes were grown in l 1 environments, q1 proportion selected and grown in l 2 additional environments, and the desirable genotypes selected based on their yields in the (l 1 + l 2) environments. The solution involved doubly trucating a bivariate normal distribution. Relations were developed and general recommendations for a testing procedure were made. For typical characters under selection 2 replications per environment would be recommended. The effects of (l 1 +l 2) allocation are discussed. The testing program for soybean breeding was used as a specific example. || ABSTRACT AUTHORS: Authors
