We show experimentally and theoretically that coupling between a spin system and the NMR probe, which is responsible for radiation damping, can also act to generate multiple‐quantum coherences, even in molecules such as water which ordinarily have no multiple‐quantum spectrum. We discuss the implications of this observation for solvent suppression sequences and for preparing nonequilibrium spin states.
