Preliminary studies were made on 3 commercial herds of 56, 57 and 104 cows (mainly Friesian). It was shown that 80-85% of cows entered the milking parlour mainly at random, but the other 15-20% consistently entered in the same approximate position in the milking order. There was a slight tendency for higher yielding cows to enter in the earlier stages of milking.
