There has recently been a dramatic increase in the use of zebrafish Danio rerio as a laboratory model to study basic mechanisms of vertebrate developmental genetics. Based on diagnostic examinations conducted through the Zebrafish International Resource Center on 27 zebrafish research facilities, the most common disease in this fish is neural microsporidiosis. The infection is most common in the spinal chord and hindbrain. It also occurs in ventral root ganglia and somatic muscle, where it is associated with inflammation. These fish are usually severely emaciated and may exhibit scoliotic changes.
