A method for the cryopreservation of E. gracilis is described; for 26 strains the recovery on thawing was at least 30%. Mehtanol (10%, vol/vol) was the only effective cryoprotectant for freezing to, and thawing from -196.degree. C, though the recovery of cells depended on the rates of cooling and warming.
