Data are presented on the normal maturation of the erythrocytes of the chick embryo from day 8 through hatching. There is in general a progressive increase in numbers of erythrocytes and in the amount of hemoglobin present, but not in the hemoglobin content of the individual cell. The changing relationship of the 3 types of erythrocyte is presented in detail. For most of the facets studied days 8-10 and 15-17 are the periods of most rapid change. Data on cell size differ significantly from previous reports and this seems related primarily to technique[long dash]the use of allantoic venepuncture to obtain specimens, and the use of heparin as an anticoagulant, in the present study. Leucocytes were found to appear later in the circulation than had previously been thought. Earlier appearance was probably caused by the trauma of dissection.
