Two discussions of a paper with the aforementioned title by Ernesto Motta, published in this journal (Volume 120, Number 6, June 1994), are presented. Discusser Day states that the authors' solution has two limitations: 1) the location of the resultant force above the base of the retaining wall is unknown and 2) the solution does not consider moment equilibrium in the derivation of the resultant force. The second discussion focuses on the determination of the point of application of the resultant earth pressure. Discusser Ghaly notes that the mode of failure must be defined to determine the point of resultant application, and in fact, controls the procedure used in the determination of the point of application of the resultant active force.
