The colonicBacteroidesspecies are numerically predominant members of the human intestinal tract microflora (2,6). In addition to their presence as indigenous flora, these organisms are significant opportunistic pathogens implicated in a variety of infectious processes (1). Clindamycin, a lincosamide antibiotic, is used extensively as a first line drug for the treatment of anaerobic infections caused byBacteroidesspecies. However, the increasing emergence of lincosamide-macrolide (LM) (e.g., clindamycin-erythromycin) resistantBacteroidesin the clinical setting (18) has severely compromised routine antimicrobial chemotherapy.
