Iceland has abundant resources in the form of water power and geothermal energy, but development of these sources will be costly and often dangerous. Numerous waterfalls and hydroelectric facilities provide nearly all of the country's electric power, while the geothermally active mid-Atlantic rift crosses Iceland and provides heat for buildings. There is a threat of frequent volcanic eruptions and seismic activity, however, and the present energy supplies have been felt to be adequate to meet the modest domestic demand. If the Icelandic people elect a large-scale energy development for export purposes, the author projects decades of problems and frustrations.
