Ethnic and religious identity is currently a subject of intense public and policy debate in European societies. The development of ethnic identity has long been explored as a key element of psychological function; but minority identity is also widely regarded as being informative about, and consequential for, the societies in which those minorities live (Berry 2005; Leach et al. 2008). In the UK, identification of minorities with the national story is considered to be a barometer of society (Parekh 2000), and has been used to evaluate community cohesion and the success of the multicultural project (Cameron 2011). Particular anxiety has focused on the second generation of minorities, with the concern that ‘home-grown extremism’ is being fostered among those who are alienated or whosubscribe to identities that put them at odds with ‘national’ values. However, despite a range of competing claims about minority groups’ identification with national or minority identities across generations, these claims have not been extensively tested for the UK’s minority ethnic groups. This paper sets out briefly to elaborate the theoretical positions that currently inform our understanding of generational identity continuity and change, before evaluating the extent to which they are supported by analysis using a unique, large-scale, nationally representative data set.
